Dance Artist, Choreographer, Creator, Master Educator
Sophie Barbarics is an internationally recognized dance educator,
choreographer and artistic innovator whose two-decade career bridges the cultural and aesthetic landscapes of Europe and North America. Now based in Nelson, BC, Canada, she is the founder of FootNotes Dance Co. in Budapest and co-director of The Booster and Yolone Art Group in Canada—platforms that reflect her ethos of collaboration, inquiry, and transformation.
Her award-winning short dance film Daffodils (2024–26)—a poetic collaboration among Hungarian, Australian, and Canadian artists—interlaces themes of human connection, loss, and resilience through the language of embodied movement. Currently, Sophie is cultivating Ember.kind, an international initiative reimagining performance, pedagogy, and peacebuilding through choreographic research and dialogue.
Her artistic résumé includes collaborations with the Hungarian State Opera, the Operetta Theatre, Batsheva Dance Company, Charles Bailey Theatre, and the Hungarian Dance University, where she contributed to the formation of Hungary’s national curriculum in modern dance.
Rooted in improvisation, somatic awareness, and contemporary technique, Sophie’s practice invites authenticity and creative agency—illuminating movement as a living practice of empathy, transformation, and shared humanity.

Accredited Professional Photographer, Master Educator, Multidisciplinary Artist
I am an accredited professional photographer, master educator and multidisciplinary artist.I was lucky enough to have a colourful background from being a national champion gymnast, working in film studios as a cartoon artist, being a professional dancer-singer-choreographer in many theatres, spending 6 years in medical education and being a University professor for the last 15 years. I learned analog photography in my high school years, but in that period of my life I was more driven towards the fine arts, which I practiced for ten years. In 2016 I had a vision to connect all my disciplines and experiences in photography again. As a Hungarian creator I worked as the official photographer for the Hungarian National Theatre, the National Dance Theatre, the National Dance Magazine and most of the professional dance companies in the country. My campaign works can be seen on billboards and city posters in many towns in Europe, like Paris, Helsinki or Brussels. As an educator I gained worldwide reputation from Dubai across the USA to Beijing, China. With 3 decades in the professional theatre business as a movement teacher, choreographer and coach, I trained many generations of artists while refining my skills in directing and lighting.I got my first “NIVO” award in 2001 as best choreographer, and the second in 2013 as best educator, which are national recognitions for being among the best in these professions. I like to shoot on open locations and also in studios to create something unique, where composition, lights, movement, imagination and emotions are creating the magic together. I continue my passion for teaching and mentoring in the realm of visual communication. Now I live and work in BC Canada, in cooperation with local businesses and artists, travelling around the continent organizing photoshoots, courses and workshops.
