Sophie Barbarics

dance artist, educator, creator, traveller

I am a professional dancer, master dance teacher, and creator with over twenty years of experience. Dance has been a part of my life since I was ten, and by nineteen, I was already teaching in various dance schools across Hungary.
My passion led me to graduate with distinction from the Hungarian Dance University, earning a Master’s in Modern Dance Teaching after completing my BA in Dance Summa Cum Laude in 2013.
My journey has taken me across Europe and Asia, teaching classes and workshops while collaborating with prestigious institutions such as the Hungarian State Opera, Operetta Theatre, Batsheva Dance Company, Hungarian Dance University, and Charles Bailey Theatre. For years, I was also the preferred movement and dance coach for the children of well-known American actors.
Throughout my career I worked with many professionals and amateurs as well, therefore I see and understand how to talk to and properly approach people coming from all sorts of backgrounds. I've come to understand what kind of physical and mental differences we have to take into account while teaching, which is the main focus of my instructional methodology.
For the past decade, I have been the founder and owner of Footnotes Dance Co. in Hungary.
My teaching philosophy and methods are rooted in my 4 academic studies (with 3 degrees) and all of the international workshops and intensives that I have attended in the last 20 years. I’ve studied sociology and have a BA degree in Croatian language and literature as well as a BA modern dancer diploma and the Master’s Degree. For me just to dance was never enough. I always wanted to dig deep into why? How? What if?
My
dance classes/sessions/choreographic processes should become a safe place: to grow as a dancer and not only just a dancer. To become more resilient, be able to change your mindset quickly, dare to be goofy, find the bravery inside yourself.
