Sophie Barbarics

dance artist, educator, creator, traveller

I am a professional dancer, master dance teacher, and creator with over twenty years of experience. Dance has been a part of my life since I was ten, and by nineteen, I was already teaching in various dance schools across Hungary.
My passion led me to graduate with distinction from the Hungarian Dance University, earning a Master’s in Modern Dance Teaching after completing my BA in Dance Summa Cum Laude in 2013.
My journey has taken me across Europe and Asia, teaching classes and workshops while collaborating with prestigious institutions such as the Hungarian State Opera, Operetta Theatre, Batsheva Dance Company, Hungarian Dance University, and Charles Bailey Theatre. For years, I was also the preferred movement and dance coach for the children of well-known American actors.
Throughout my career I worked with many professionals and amateurs as well, therefore I see and understand how to talk to and properly approach people coming from all sorts of backgrounds. I've come to understand what kind of physical and mental differences we have to take into account while teaching, which is the main focus of my instructional methodology.
For the past decade, I have been the founder and owner of Footnotes Dance Co. in Hungary.
My teaching philosophy and methods are rooted in my 4 academic studies (with 3 degrees) and all of the international workshops and intensives that I have attended in the last 20 years. I’ve studied sociology and have a BA degree in Croatian language and literature as well as a BA modern dancer diploma and the Master’s Degree. For me just to dance was never enough. I always wanted to dig deep into why? How? What if?
My
dance classes/sessions/choreographic processes should become a safe place: to grow as a dancer and not only just a dancer. To become more resilient, be able to change your mindset quickly, dare to be goofy, find the bravery inside yourself.

Janos Lakatos

NIVO awarded teacher and photographer

I am an accredited professional photographer, master educator and multidisciplinary artist.
I was lucky enough to have a colourful background  from being a national champion gymnast, working in film studios as a cartoon artist, being a professional dancer-singer-choreographer in many theatres, spending 6 years in medical education and being a University professor for the last 15 years.

I learned analog photography in my high school years, but in that period of my life I was more driven towards the fine arts, which I practiced for ten years. In 2016 I had a vision to connect all my disciplines and experiences in photography again. As a Hungarian creator I worked as the official photographer for the Hungarian National Theatre, the National Dance Theatre, the National Dance Magazine and most of the professional dance companies in the country.
My campaign works can be seen on billboards and city posters in many towns in Europe, like Paris, Helsinki or Brussels.

As an educator I gained worldwide reputation from Dubai across the USA to Beijing, China. With 3 decades in the professional theatre business as a movement teacher, choreographer and coach, I trained many generations of artists while refining my skills in directing and lighting.
I got my first “NIVO” award in 2001 as best choreographer, and the second in 2013 as best educator, which are national recognitions for being among the best in these professions.

I like to shoot on open locations and also in studios to create something unique, where composition, lights, movement, imagination and emotions are creating the magic together. I continue my passion for teaching and mentoring in the realm of visual communication.

Now I live and work in BC Canada, in cooperation with local businesses and artists, travelling around the continent organizing photoshoots, courses and workshops.
